alan alda storytime
the full story from one of the screenshots of my previous post.
story begins with my archaeology professor showing a slide of alan alda in the early 2000s holding some mammoth bones and asks the class if anyone recognizes him. i had watched some MASH with my mother when i was little and had also seen the movie The Object of My Affection, so i raised my hand and said it was alan alda. he lit up and said yes, it was, and told the rest of the class he used to be on this old show, and that when we got more into the bioanthro side of things, remind him to 'tell his alan alda story'.
about 2 months later, we are in bioanthro, and i remind him. he gets excited and says he included slides to talk about it.
[rest under cut]
he tells us how he had just moved to a new city, and he had taken a university job in order to get insurance for his new family [which he didnt get but thats neither here or there]. he gets news that his job is going to be working with Scientific American Frontiers, hosted by the one and only Alan Alda. my prof was thrilled, he loves MASH, and while he specifically wouldnt be involved in the process [being a presenter, working with alan, etc] he was allowed to be around incase they needed help.
i dont know the specific episode, or if it can be found anywhere, but the topic was early man and tools, and how there were mammoth bones that specifically had cuts that could only be made with tools, not by teeth from an animal. they had finished filming for the day and just needed B-roll of some lions at the local zoo chewing some bones [part of the experiment], and alan got a call. he asked if he could head out now, because he needed to get back to his hotel now, and the call had been important. the producers said sure, go ahead, and alan asked if someone could give him a ride.
my professor, having the chance to actually spend time with someone he idolized, and being a stupid late 20s-something, volunteered immediately. stupid why? well, i said he'd just moved there. he didnt know where the hell anything was, and he didnt have GPS available to him, he was just really excited. so they get in the car and start driving.
as i said in my previous post, alan alda had about 20 minutes with this random guy, and found out pretty quickly that he was an archaeologist, and the amazing topic of conversation that he picked was the [then new] theory that we developed agriculture specifically to make booze, and that the rest of the stuff was more or less a biproduct. which is pretty on-brand honestly.
after a while, alan catches on to the fact that this guy clearly has no idea where the hell hes going, and that they've been driving in circles around the city for a while now. he [reportedly very politely] said that actually, this here was his stop, and thanked him for the ride. he then most likely called a taxi that actually knew where it was going, and got to his hotel.
turns out the call was about The Aviator! the call was important because he learned it was confirmed he in it and they needed him to get over there.
its not a glamourous story, but its the only story i got. my prof reported he was a funny guy, and despite slightly kidnapping the poor man for a while, he was the picture of kindness and personability. and clearly he likes telling the story and it left an impression, because he took time out of our already-short lecture to tell a class of 20-somethings that had no idea who Alan Alda was about it.
sorry this is so verbose i dont know how to be short lmao
#oh yeah#this show is hosted by a guy from an old TV show#mash#mash 4077#mashblogging#alan alda#m*a*s*h#hawkeye pierce#this is the same prof that organized an off-campus field trip thing#and when i said i didnt have a way to get to the place he just. offered to give me a ride#this was a class of like 200 people and just 'well if you need to get there and dont mind a messy truck-'#A+ person overall. gave me a piece of obsidian debitage from a flintknapping demonstration#even babyproofed it for me beforehand. still cut myself on it [i broke a tiny piece off on accident and made it sharp again]#also that moment of raising my hand to go 'alan alda meethinks' was horrifying#silent room looking at this picture of this dude handling mammoth bones and im like 'i can identify this old man. maybe.'#wasnt even sure. ive rewatched MASH now but at the time it was foggy#wasnt even the first time hes shown up in my schooling! im going into psych and the bastard has appeared twice#that episode where they cut the guys corpus callosum. imagine being a 17 yo in a room of 15 yos#[i took the class late] and silently freaking out cause you know who that is but no one else does and then the teacher says#and then a year later being in college in your first psych class and the SAME VIDEO gets played. wild shit#anyway that makes 3 years in a row that at least 1 class has had alan alda in it. if it gets to May next year and he hasnt shown up#im gonna make him show up somehow. dissertation on how hawkeye pierce is a good example of PTSD in media#be the change you want to see in the world

Aside from being a Potter hater, I really do think it's a shame we lost Henry because McLean Stevenson was a comedic heavyweight not just as an actor but as a writer, giving us The Trial of Henry Blake and The Army-Navy Game. He was unafraid to commit whole-heartedly to the bit, and while some of Henry's heroism in Trial was probably McLean's positive bias, I think it was nice that we got to see Henry's competence as a doctor shine through despite his incompetence as a CO. On early MASH, this was the sign of a heroic character, so it falls neatly in line with what the narrative was trying to tell us anyway.
"Your boss is not your friend" but Henry didn't want to be anyone's boss and he doesn't appear to be suffering any delusions that he's any good at the job. He wants to hang out with the cool kids, Hawkeye and Trapper and do the things they do: get drunk, fuck around, practice medicine and dream of home. I can't think of a show that's replicated the Henry-Trapper-Hawkeye dynamic.
Any time Henry tries to use his rank, he ends up flat on his ass. Women reject him for it, Hawkeye and Trapper pull fast ones on him, and he never lives up to Burns and Houlihan's expectations anyway.
At one point Henry muses aloud to Hawkeye that he might be getting to do more interesting work as a doctor in the war than he was doing back home. I think this is one time I can actually stand to hear the other side of it. What Henry is expressing here is a disillusionment with comforts of upper-middle-to-upper-class suburban life, a very How did I get here??? moment for him if I may say so. And a pretty normal thing for him to feel.
I like how Larry Gelbart imagined Trapper might've responded to a similar hypothetical:
REPORTER: Do you feel this experience has in any way helped you as a doctor?
TRAPPER JOHN: Let me ask you a question: just how many people you figure’re going to be carried into my office someday with a chunk of shrapnel sticking out of their heads? I don’t know where you live, pal, but where I come from very few folks ever step on a landmine in the middle of trying to cross the street.
Instead of Henry coming to this himself, we have Hawkeye to shoot him down immediately, and good on him for it, but those kinds of initial reflections on the state of one's life are the first step to doing something about one's dissatisfaction. For a character like Henry, who isn't often moved to do anything that pushes him outside of his comfort zone, I like this as some depth for him. And I would've liked to have seen him stay on and be proved wrong, you know, without him dying on the way to his beautiful house, beautiful wife etc.
I also think McLean would've handled the shift from the more comedic to dramatic moments masterfully. We already see pieces of it in Sometimes You Hear the Bullet and Abyssinia Henry.
And most importantly we lost something when the incompetent draftee CO was replaced by the on-my-third-war-ex-cavalry-man-and-damn-proud-of-it guy. There's an assumed 'respect' everyone, even Hawkeye, is expected to afford Potter if not for his rank, then his age. This is the opposite of what was done with Henry, where Hawkeye and Trapper openly flouted the notion that they should respect Henry because of his rank.
Like even if Trapper had stayed on and continued in his unquestioning support of Hawkeye's campaigns, I don't think that would've flown with Potter unless the show was willing to make him the butt of the joke the way that Henry sometimes was and indeed there's not much evidence of it ever happening post season 4. There is that one episode where he gets high and the gang ferry him back and forth to get him to requisition supplies - which was great, and very Henry-like but I can't think of many other examples.
Because MASH was progressive for it's time, it's very interesting to see where it draws the line. It didn't do great with race, it was so-so with women all the way through... but these things seem pretty obvious and to some even forgivable on account of "it's the product of its time". I think another limit for the show was the treatment of the highest-ranking officer on the base in the later years. Henry vs. Potter - Henry who the show had no problem trampling over and Potter who it very politely tip-toed past, resulting in some comparatively lukewarm and dated statements on authority. When it comes to Potter "Your boss is not your friend" is something Hawkeye, BJ, Klinger and Radar all need to hear.
#mash#re: mash#henry meta#potter meta#this ended up being potter vs henry anyway but that's one fandom war i will gladly make my militant stance very clear on

I FORGOT MY DRAWING PEN AT MY MOM'S FUUUUUUCK
Man that's bc I was gonna draw another Lucky thing 😭😭
Oh well, maybe this would allow me to actually work on the stuff for the fic I wanna post eventually
I've actually been meaning to do a poll for it, but didn't really know if people were interested enough?
A LOT of stuff is still in concept because I want to make a timeline of events first before doing anything.
I'll be honest, I don't know much about X-Men. I've only seen some of the movies, and have only recently started reading the comics(out of order mind you). Luckily, the fic isn't going to focus too much on the X-Men stuff. At least not in the beginning, only when and probably after Lucky gets reunited with Kurt and the other Bamfs, does some of that get intertwined.
Any action stuff is mainly going to revolve around the magical girl based system/ kinda secret society thing I made for it? That too is still in the workshop.
Now I want to make it a reader-insert(also maybe a kinda slow burn Kurt/Reader type [Reader and Kurt are adults just to make that clear.]bc I need to see more of those) as I've been wanting to do one of those for a while, but just have never been able to be in the right state to type stuff down.
This post is already getting waaaay too long with my rambling, so I'll just explain what I wanted to make a poll about
For Reader, I kinda wanted to keep them vague for everyone
As I do want this to be gender neutral
But given that this is in the X-Men universe
I was wondering if I should make Reader a mutant or not?
And if a Mutant, what kind?
I'll ask the first question, and we'll go from there
I'll leave it up for a bit
#I will reveal more about the fic concept as i go#especially since its gonna be an eventual magical girl genre/X-Men mash up thing#taking inspiration from a couple magical girl shows#I've been looking at other names for a general title of magical girls bc in my system#while there is a criteria for who becomes one#generally teens or adults can get chosen#as the concept of adults being a magical girl has always been sad or hilarious to me#but back to the names#Thaumaturgist is something I'm thinking of calling them but not too sure?#kurt wagner#bamf#nightcrawler#bamfs#nightcrawler bamfs#xmen#magical girl concept#magical world#magical girl#kurt wagner x reader#nightcrawler x reader#UniversalRambles#if no one sees this ima cry-/j

Let's Talk Cuphead's Monster Complex
I've deleted and rewritten this a million times trying to put this neatly and maybe find sources but SCREW IT we ball!
So the thing I think about with Cup's monster complex [what I've deemed his "I'm a bad person" thought process, he is but that's not the point] is how it protects and damages him
Like this guy is out here talking to all his pals pre-Labyrinth and going "You might've destroyed xyz with the intent to kill but I actually killed people and I know your not as bad as me cuz I said so" which CANNOT be good for his mental health, sure it makes everyone else feel better because I don't think they fully process the fact of Cup comparing their wrongs with his and how that's not good
I think we see the point of it being at it's worst within the Labyrinth when he's debating killing himself in order to beat the Devil, which ya under first glance is him debating on ultimatum but it's genuinely suicide ideation we saw there. The idea "better people are better without me" [<-I'll get to this in a second]
This self-destructive pattern is what pulls Cup to the points where he's at now. He's a bad person, being a bad person [aka associated with the mafia] will lead to bad things happening to the people around him which is his fault [his thoughtprocess nobody else's] because it was the result of a chain reaction of his own decisions, so now he's trying to make good decisions to protect the people around him
But he can't leave and those things that are actively still a threat to the people he loves. So then he picks up this idea that he can help them by being a better person but also by utilizing his skills that he's learned from growing up in the mafia. So it's never enough improvement but he's trying, that's what he tells himself.
Because it's how he protected Mugs, do the dirty work, so that Mugs didn't get hurt. Take the hard hits [literally and figuratively] so when he finds other people he cares about, but now holds a higher standard for him as a person, he finds himself at a problem
The easy answer is lean on what he knows, the hard one is learn new things to handle the situation, rely on other's around him and trust them, and that not every bad thing is his fault
And after the Labyrinth, after Mugs took control of the Devil situation [he didn't end up in that position, he took it from his brother], when he's forced to heal and recover, is when he finally starts to internalize some of that, is when he finally actually starts to improve as a person
And this is when we discover one of Cup's greatest fears that was hinted at in the Labyrinth, he's terrified of losing everyone, just like he lost his parents when he was 3, just like he was forced away from Elder Kettle, and more then what he had to deal with as a teen. With the only grounding force being "At least Mugs is with me"
And I don't just mean loss as in physically gone, I mean morally and emotionally as well. You can see this fear with Holly, imagining a future with her. Imagining all the ways he could lose the girl he knows right in front of him.
This is when he falls back into older habits, when he's afraid, then when he's guilty because he just ruined another good thing didn't he? When he's kissed by Fanny and reminded that he's just a crook, he couldn't do something good without there being something else. And then he kills Winky.
Because Cup doesn't like acknowledging his worst feelings. He knows they're there. He just doesn't want to see them.
#orb ponders#the inky mystery#orb talks#my gf pointed out the title is like one off of youtube so imagine me frothing at the mouth periodically in a chair#I didn't proofread this post so let's just hope it's as good as I'm hoping [many posts have been lost for not being good enough for tumblr]#Kinda mashed every single Cup topic I wanted to address into one post#Anyway quick mention this is not me justifying this man I just like to get in a character's head#I've tried to write this and deleted this or got busy for 2 weeks now#Here u go Cup fans take y'alls food#babitim#Still feel like it's lackluster compared to my other posts but oh well I suppose#Although the “Cuphead has abandonment issues” claim came out of left field even for me I'll see how this holds up later when I'm not hungry

I often think about Daniel Pierce seeing Hawkeye again for the first time in 3 years when he gets off that plane. and I often wonder how Daniel feels when he sees his son, who is probably barely past 30, is almost as grey as he is
#mash#daniel pierce#hawkeye pierce#we dont have a canon age for Hawkeye as far as im aware but in my head at the end of series he's 30. maybe 31#and Daniel we have no canon appearance but he's likely completely grey#hell he might've even gone white#MASH is one of those very rare instances where I think the actors being older than the characters theyre playing WORKS#Hawkeye going grey throughout the series. chef's kiss#yes I know its because Alan Alda was going grey and eventually they stopped dying his hair to hide it#but its a fun little tragic element. the war ages Hawkeye so much#Daniel's son leaves home a bright-eyed up-and-coming young surgeon#and he comes back looking 15 years older than he is and his eyes are dull and haunted

hawkeye's effeminacy being a point of pride and appeal in the first half of the show and shifting to, not always but much more often, a point of derision in the last few seasons like the vast majority of other unmasculine men in media is disappointing but so emblematic of the shift in portrayals of men from the 70s to the 80s in hollywood media
#this is another thing i could probably write an essay on but it would be hard not to go on 50 tangents lol so i'm being concise for now#the difference between 'i'm engaged to a pilot' 'so am i - i just hope it's not the same one' and 'my boyfriend is taller than you#with huge muscles and could beat you up' is stark and depressing lol#mash#marley on mash#mash gs

Lemon's relationship to magic
This is a companion piece to my Lemon case study and Life Goes On. I highly recommend reading both for this post!
As always, inspired by my exchanges with @books-are-my-life-stuff
Lemon knows that being at Easton is a privilege and wants to try her best and to do right by her family & the people who helped her.
She works herself to the bone. But in a society where magic is worshiped and a gift from god, progress is equated with increased magical energy, e.g. casting powerful spells like Secondth & Thirds, becoming a double or triple liner, casting wordless and/or wandless magic etc.
Weak wizards are considered scum and deserve to be mistreated "the strong have the right to take from the weak." Young Regro was constantly belittled and considered ending it. Lemon must have had a similar treatment to him, leading to low self-esteem and tying her worth to her magic.
Surrounded by powerful classmates, her shaky confidence is tested daily and Lemon works even harder. She is in many ways becoming a better version of herself but her magic levels remain the same and her self-esteem suffers because of it.
She felt left behind since the Magia Lupus arc. The boys qualified for the Divine Visionary exams and were later trained by divine visionaries for the Innocent Zero fight. They were on the front lines and saved the world while Lemon did nothing.
She didn’t share her worries with her friends because she didn’t want to be a burden. As the eldest daughter, she is used to acting strong for her family. Compared to Mash’s and even Lance’s problems, Lemon’s worries seemed so insignificant.
Her friends know her as the unhinged Mash “wife” and as written here, Lemon does feel VERY strongly about Mash. But it's also a way to hide her insecurities and weaknesses. She hides her true self because she believes no one will accept her for who she is. Her friends are nothing like that but Lemon can’t unsee how society has treated people like her. The boys don’t suspect anything, except Finn who doesn’t push and waits for Lemon to share.
After the Innocent Zero fight, Lemon felt useless despite saving Mash (who later saved the world) and rallying people together to defeat Innocent. She dismissed her actions as they required little to no magic.
The clock is ticking on her time at Easton Academy and the privileges it afforded her. Lemon has to improve NOW. Working by herself was not enough anymore.
As written in Life Goes On, Lemon seeks out Finn because he started off the most like her and now his magic has increased tenfold. She studies just as hard, if not harder than Finn. The main difference she see is Finn being trained by Kaldo, the Head of the Magic Talent Administration. Having witnessed Lemon's courage and loyalty firsthand, Kaldo readily agrees to train her.
#mashle magic and muscles#mashle#lemon irvine#finn ames#kaldo gehenna#*lemon irvine#my/rambling#lemon being trained by kaldo makes so much sense!#i love thinking lemon finally being comfortable being herself#and opening up to her friends especially finn and mash#i have some vague ideas about lemon's training#didn't feel like making a new gif#so using one of aera's wonderful gifs!

Growing up is realizing you don't hate shipping, you just really wish the execution of it was less amatonormative
#hot aro shit#actually aromantic#romance repulsed#amatonormativity#like. I roll my eyes at ship culture for the most part. but it really isn't the ships themselves. it's just how weird ppl are about it..#a lot of folks will pair everyone. e v e r y o n e. and it's like.. in doing so they just kinda mix and match who 'works best' with who-#without really considering if they would partner with anyone in the first place. like. ppl are nonpartnering for a number of reasons#besides being aspec or adjacent. it's just weird assuming everyone would get with someone when single ppl exist!#and the way a lot of shipping is set up.. it feels like they're lopping chunks of the characters off. mangling them beyond recognition-#just to fit them into these specific dynamics. specifically romantic tropes. instead of embracing tropes that compliment the character-#and preserve the integrity if you are truly utilizing these characters. and look. I get the appeal of shipping. it's fun to mash characters-#together like dolls and set up these stories with them. but if you have to fundamentally erase every unique aspect of them for it-#or ignore large chunks of what makes them who they are in the first place? are you really shipping those characters? or are you making them-#original characters with the names and faces of your favorites?#pairing everybody is also just incredibly lazy lmfao. like. ignoring the fact nonpartnering ppl (both aspec and otherwise) exist..#you're barring yourself from exploring narratives you otherwise would be able to expand upon with characters- that sometimes-#matches don't really work out. or the pressure to find someone when no one 'fits.' abuse victims relearning who they are outside-#of what they bring to the relationships in their day to day lives. friendships that defy the idea romance is the strongest love.#deconstructing the idea of love being something everyone needs. like. you cannot execute that when you pair everyone!#anyways. ship what you ship. idc. but please be mindful of how harmful the ideas you're pushing can be.

I think if you are bad at music and music mixing and making mashups and have no creativity and are unwilling to put effort into making something sound good that maybe you shouldn't consider yourself the standard for what people who do music professionally could achieve.
Update: OP of that post and I have blocked each other about it. Might seem extreme given the way blocking is viewed sometimes but actually it was civil and amicable (well. As amicable as it could be.) They reached out to me because apparently I had commented about this multiple times but had forgotten, so I was really taking it too far, so because I could find the most recent comment I removed it, and we decided to block each other to be sure this wouldn't happen again.
#I still feel the same way about that post but please know the OP is not a bad person or anything.#leaving the original tags I wrote on this post so get ready for a tone shift.#I HATE THAT POST SO MUCH IT'S UNREAL#FUCKING HELL OF COURSE IT SOUNDS BAD WHEN YOU DO IT BAD#maybe of you TRIED but NOOOOO#istg I have probably listened to those songs mashed up because I follow some emo mashup accounts and if you put even an ounce of effort into#it then it sounds fine. and that's just talking mashups using the pre-existing recordings not even TOUCHING on the possibility of rewriting#pieces to fit together and flow into each other nicely. like literally one if the bands named in that post HAS DONE THIS BEFORE that being#Fall Out Boy with What A Catch Donnie.#'I couldn't so it in 5 second therefore no-one could do it especially not the original artists who have experience with these songs already#and have experience rewriting songs to fit together and who would spend time working on it and practicing it before their big show'#like you didn't even ADJUST THE FUCKING KEYS TO MATCH#not even just PITCH SHIFTED ignore matching the majors and minors but you couldn't even do THAT#GOD#GO FUCK YOURSELF#ThornShadow.said
